Bush defends offer to allow Rove, Miers testimony behind closed doors; Will block any efforts to subpoena White House officials

On Tuesday evening, President Bush backed his beleaguered Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales, and defended a White House offer to allow "behind closed doors" testimony by Karl Rove and Harriet Miers regarding the firing of eight US Attorneys. Bush said that he would block any efforts to subpoena White House officials.

In his address, Bush proclimed his administration's disclosure of an "unprecedented" number of documents showing how the firing of those U.S. attorneys was handled. He went on to defend that process.

"There is no indication that anybody did anything improper," said Bush, asserting that Democrats were more interested in "scoring political points" than in constructing an honest account of the firings. The president accused Democrats of trying to mount a "partisan fishing expedition." More...
