Truth or Terrorism: The Real Story Behind Five Years of High Alerts
A history of the Bush administration's most dubious terror scares — and the headlines they buried

TIM DICKINSON | RollingStone

"Sometimes we disagreed with the intelligence assessment. There were times when some people in the administration were really aggressive about raising the threat level, and we said, 'For that?!'" — Former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge, May 2005

The Bush administration has never shied from playing the fear card to distract the American public from scandal or goad them into supporting a deeply flawed foreign policy. Here a history of the administration's most-dubious terror alerts — including three consecutive Memorial Day scare-a-thons — all of which proved far less terrifying than the screamer headlines they inspired.

February 12, 2002

The Threat: Yemenite terrorist set to attack U.S. — today! "I want, to encourage... all Americans everywhere to be on the highest state of alert," warns Attorney General John Ashcroft.

The Reality: The threat hadn't been corroborated by U.S. intelligence agencies — and the evidence actually pointed to an attack not in the U.S., but in Yemen.

The Real News: Announced the same day that Enron CEO Ken Lay appeared before Congress, and a week after the White House was instructed not to destroy its Enron-related documents.

'It's going to be much worse'
Famed investor Jim Rogers sees hard times ahead for the United States - and a big opportunity looming in China.

By Brian O'Keefe, senior editor | Fortune Magazine

NEW YORK (Fortune) -- You might expect Jim Rogers to be gloating a little bit. After all, the famed investor has been predicting a recession in the U.S. economy for months and shorting the shares of now-tanking Wall Street investment banks for even longer. And with fears of a recession sparking both a worldwide market sell-off and emergency action from Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke, Rogers again looks prescient - just as he has over the past few years as the China-driven commodities boom he predicted almost a decade ago began kicked into high gear. But when I reached him by phone in Singapore the other day there was little hint of celebration in his voice. Instead, he took a serious tone.

9-11 - Bush Was Behind Silencing of Dr. Steven E. Jones on Thermite

When I met with 9-11 researcher and scientist Professor Steven E. Jones at Brigham Young University in the winter and spring of 2006, I tried to impress upon him that there were people in the 9-11 movement who were dangerous and who were not at all interested in finding the truth about what happened on September 11, 2001. The 9-11 movement was infested with agents, as one should expect.

Staying Sane in an Insane World

By Henry Makow Ph.D.

When we see a man talking to himself and gesticulating, we think he is nuts. But the main difference between him and us is that we mute our voices and gestures.

Like crazy men, we are always talking to ourselves: analyzing, planning, remembering, rehearsing, rejoicing, grousing or fantasizing.

According to Eckhart Tolle, 59, our habit of identifying with this voice in our head is the root of our spiritual bondage. His bestselling book The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment (1999) draws on many religious traditions to proclaim that spiritual liberation is detaching our identity from our thoughts and instead identifying with our soul, which he calls "Being."

This skill is more important than ever in an increasingly precarious world. Planet Earth is run by sell-outs and perverts who serve the central bankers' plan to hijack humanity for their own bizarre, greedy and occult ends. They use the mass media and education to manipulate, distort and degrade us.

The 'war on terror' licenses a new stupidity in geopolitics
The language loved by Bush and Musharraf has translated into a global disaster bringing death and misery to millions

Simon Jenkins | The Guardian

Nothing and nobody can stop bombs going off. No citizen, no police force, no army, no government and no global military alliance can prevent a determined suicide bomber from blowing himself up. It will happen and innocent people will die as a result, horribly, as they do on the roads, from drugs and alcohol, or from natural disasters - again without responsible authority being able to stop it.

What is recent is the admission of this truism into the mainstream of government under the rubric of "terrorism". This week two outgoing presidents, America's George Bush and Pakistan's Pervez Musharraf, defined their terms of office in relation to terror. Bush did so in his final state of the union message on Monday and Musharraf that same day in London during a charm offensive prior to next month's elections.

To Bush, the "war on terror" is the ruling mantra of his politics of fear. Since 9/11 gave a prop to his weakening presidency, his language has scaled new heights of alarmist rhetoric. It has validated every internal repression and every external war. "He who is not with us is against us," he cries. Terrorists everywhere are "opposing the advance of liberty ... evil men who despise freedom, despise America and aim to subject millions to their violent rule".

Unimaginable Intentional Human Suffering

Humans tend to submit to those who claim authority, since it is easier to believe in symbols of power, than it is to personally submit to the tedium of the reasoning process. Gilad Atzmon - Two Jewish Jokes (and a Hain in the Middle)

PeacePalestine Blog

A story is told of a Londoner, a Jewish man who was riding on the London Underground reading an Arab newspaper. A friend of his, who happened to be riding in the same underground car, noticed this strange phenomenon. Very upset, he approached the newspaper reader.

"Moishe, have you lost your mind? Why are you reading an Arab newspaper?" Moishe replied, "I used to read the Jewish newspaper, but what did I find? Jews being persecuted, Israel being attacked, Jews disappearing through assimilation and intermarriage, Jews living in poverty. So I switched to the Arab newspaper. Now what do I find? Jews own all the banks, Jews control the media, Jews are all rich and powerful, Jews rule the world. The news is so much better!"

Truth must be said, Moishe, is telling the truth here. The Jewish press in Britain is panicking lately and they have good reason, too. While the British papers are filling their mouths with water hiding the real story behind the huge Labour donation sleaze, the UK Jewish press is overwhelmingly concerned with the unveiling saga. We have already learned about Lord ‘cash machine’ Levy who acted as ‘No 1 Labour fund raiser’. We have learned recently about David Abrahams who donated his money to the party by proxy. Both Levy and Abrahams were overwhelmingly active at the time Britain was taken into an illegal war by the Labour government. David Abrahams already admitted in an interview to the Jewish Chronicle that he donated money by proxy to “to quell conspiracy fears”.

How They Control The World

By Henry Makow Ph.D. | TheTruthSeeker

To understand current events, we need a new paradigm.

The paradigm fostered by the mass media of a 'balanced' world consisting of competing interests, nations, ideologies and religions only gives us false confidence and traps us in a false matrix of "good guys vs. bad guys."

As my readers know, I suspect that most “competing” groups/ideologies actually have been created or subverted by a single force: a satanic cult, the Illuminati (Sabbatean-Frankist Jews and cabalistic Freemasons.) This clique is empowered by a cartel of cartels, beginning with world central banking, based in London. It uses MI-6, the CIA, the Mossad and other “Intelligence” agencies as instruments and controls the media and most politicians.

The Sabbatean-Frankists were a Jewish heresy that captured half the Jewish world in the 17th and 18th Century. They eschewed all morality preaching that good is evil and vice- versa. They believe that chaos and devastation will hasten the return of the Messiah. They went underground and prospered by intermarrying with non-Jews and assuming conventional Jewish or non-Jewish identities. The "Catholic" half-Jewish John Kerry or Madelaine Albright are examples.

George W Bush, White House told 935 lies after September 11

By staff writers | NEWS.com.au

The fish was this big ... George W Bush and his officials reportedly told 935 blatant lies about Iraq, WMDs and al-Qaeda after September 11 / AFP
US President George W Bush and other top officials issued almost one thousand false statements about the national security threat from Iraq following the September 11 attacks, according to a study by two not-for-profit organisations.

The Associated Press reports the study, published on the website of the Centre for Public Integrity, concluded the statements “were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanised public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretences”.

According to the study, 935 false statements were issued by the White House in the two years after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

In speeches, briefings and interviews, President Bush and other officials stated “unequivocally” on at least 532 occasions that Iraq had links to al-Qaeda, or had weapons of mass destruction or was trying to get them.

Showdown with Iran: Government Accountability Office (GAO) deals Blow to Bush's anti-Iran Sanctions Policy

By Muriel Mirak-Weissbach | Global Research

If the National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) report hammered a nail into the coffin of the Bush-Cheney Iran war policy, a new report may do similar damage to the same duo's anti-Iran sanctions policy. Just as the NIE stated that Iran has no nuclear weapons program, and implied, therefore, that this could not be used as a casus belli, so a report issued on December 18, by the Government Accountability Office, said that sanctions of the type Washington is pushing would be worthless. The GAO report sports a somewhat understated, yet unambiguous, title: "Iran Sanctions: Impact in Furthering U.S. Objectives Is Unclear and Should Be Reviewed"

(www.gao.gov/docsearch/abstract.php?rptno=GAO-08-58 for PDF file).

No, there are no gas chambers in Gaza. No, there are no crematorium in Gaza. But YES, there have been mass murders, targeted assassinations, starvation, deprivation of every essential needed to survive… including food, the lack of water, electricity, medical supplies, medical facilities, heating oil for homes, and diesel for transportation.
The worst possible is happening NOW… Don’t wait to speak out against this holocaust…. don’t wait till the numbers of dead reach the millions… ONE DEATH BY MURDER IS ONE DEATH TOO MANY….

How did Western Civilization get a monopoly on “moral conscience” when it has no morality?

By Paul Craig Roberts | InformationClearingHouse

“The first use of nuclear weapons must remain in the quiver of escalation as the ultimate instrument to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction.”

-- Five Western military leaders.

I read the statement three times trying to figure out the typo. Then it hit me, the West has now out-Owellled Orwell: The West must nuke other countries in order to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction! In Westernspeak, the West nuking other countries does not qualify as the use of weapons of mass destruction.

The astounding statement comes from a paper prepared for a Nato summit in April by five top military leaders--an American, a German, a Dutchman, a Frenchman, and a Brit. It can be found here: [http://www.guardian.co.uk/nato/story/0,,2244782,00.html]

One Step Closer to a Cheney Impeachment
More than a third of the House Judiciary Committee's Democratic members want to see Cheney ousted.

Nine out of 23 Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee favor starting impeachment hearings against Vice President Dick Cheney. Six of the nine are co-sponsors of H.R. 799, which contains three articles of impeachment.

Articles I and II of H.R. 799 accuse Cheney of purposely manipulating intelligence to deceive Congress and the American people about a fabricated threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda, respectively. Article III charges Cheney with openly threatening aggression against Iran absent any real threat to the United States. All three articles say Cheney's actions have damaged our national security interests.

Soros predicts worst recession for 50 years

The First Post

Amid collapsing stock prices worldwide, the billionaire investor George Soros has told an Austrian daily, the Standard, that the United States is threatened with recession and the world is facing the worst financial crisis in half a century. "The situation is much more serious than any other financial crisis since the end of World War II," Soros was quoted as saying.

He said over the past few years politics had been guided by some basic misunderstandings stemming from something that he called "market fundamentalism" - the belief that financial markets tended to act as a balance. "This is the wrong idea," he said. "We really do have a serious financial crisis now."

There Is No “War on Terror”

By Edward S. Herman and David Peterson | Global Research

Znet -- One of the most telling signs of the political naiveté of liberals and the Left in the United States has been their steadfast faith in much of the worldview that blankets the imperial state they call home. Nowhere has this critical failure been more evident than in their acceptance of the premise that there really is something called a "war on terror" or “terrorism”[1]—however poorly managed its critics make it out to be—and that righting the course of this war ought to be this country's (and the world’s) top foreign policy priority. In this perspective, Afghanistan and Pakistan rather than Iraq ought to have been the war on terror's proper foci; most accept that the U.S. attack on Afghanistan from October 2001 on was a legitimate and necessary stage in the war. The tragic error of the Bush Administration, in this view, was that it lost sight of this priority, and diverted U.S. military action to Iraq and other theaters, reducing the commitment where it was needed.

Al Qaeda and the "War on Terrorism"

By Michel Chossudovsky | Global Research

The following text was first published in Italian in: Giuletto Chiesa (Editor), Zero, Perché la versione ufficiale sull' 11/9 è un Falso [Zero: Why the Official Version on 9/11 is a Falsehood], Piemme, Casale Monferrato, 2007.

A detailed analysis of the relevant issues covered in this article is also contained in the author's book America’s "War on Terrorism", Global Research, 2005

Introduction

One of the main objectives of war propaganda is to "fabricate an enemy". The "outside enemy" personified by Osama bin Laden is "threatening America".

Pre-emptive war directed against "Islamic terrorists" is required to defend the Homeland. Realities are turned upside down. America is under attack.

In the wake of 9/11, the creation of this "outside enemy" has served to obfuscate the real economic and strategic objectives behind the war in the Middle East and Central Asia. Waged on the grounds of self-defense, the pre-emptive war is upheld as a "just war" with a humanitarian mandate.

As anti-war sentiment grows and the political legitimacy the Bush Administration falters, doubts regarding the existence of this illusive "outside enemy" must be dispelled.

Our "Leaders" – Whose Sick Joke?

By Henry Makow Ph.D. | HenryMakow.com

George W. Bush has returned to menacing Iran like a Tourette's patient prone to making embarrassing ill-timed outbursts.

He called Iran “the major sponsor of terrorism” when a mirror would reveal the true holder of that title, and the biggest mass murderer of the fledgling 21st century.

His Arab hosts rolled their eyes as he maligned their Iranian friends and trading partners. The US national debt has more than doubled on his watch; the US economy and dollar are tanking; and all he can do is plot another gratuitous war?

Unraveling the Myth of Al Qaida

By Peter Chamberlin | GlobalResearch

The myth of "al Qaida" is built on an expansive foundation of many half-truths and hidden facts. It is a CIA creation. It was shaped by the agency to serve as a substitute "enemy" for America, replacing the Soviets whom the Islamist forces had driven from Afghanistan. Unknown American officials, at an indeterminate point in time, made the decision to fabricate the tale of a mythical worldwide network of Islamic terrorists from the exploits of the Afghan Mujahedeen. The CIA already had their own network of Islamic militant "freedom fighters," all that was needed were a few scattered terrorist attacks against US targets and a credible heroic figurehead, to serve as the "great leader."

The CIA Created Al Qaeda and there is 'Probable Cause' to Charge George W. Bush with High Treason!

The Existentialist Cowboy

Bush's War on Terrorism is a treasonous fraud, a war on US citizens waged by the people's own government. "Terrorism", moreover, continues to be fraudulently cited in support of a war of naked aggression in which well over one million civilians have died. It is a clear violation of US Codes which bind the US to international conventions.

Now --high treason is a serious charge, in most societies, a capital offense. On June 19th in 1953, the US executed Ethel and Julius Rosenberg. They had been accused of spying for the Russians. Though there is little doubt that Julius Rosenberg spied for the Russians, the charges against his wife were most certainly specious. In any case, neither Rosenberg had done anything remotely resembling the heinous crimes for which there is probable cause now to try the person of George W. Bush, traitor to the US Constitution and the people of the United States against whom he has waged war with the apparatus of state, specifically the CIA, et al.

Recently, The Guardian's Jason Burke reported from the Middle East a truth that Bush doesn't want you to know: al Qaeda is a creation of the US CIA.

Pentagon Backtracks On Naval Confrontation With Iran, Says Threat May Not Have Come From Iranians

By Faiz | ThinkProgress.org

Earlier this week, the Pentagon said that three of its Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz had been harassed and provoked by Iranian speedboats. The Navy said it had felt so threatened that it was about to open fire on the boats. A four-minute video of the episode provided to the public by the Pentagon contained one particularly harrowing moment:
“I am coming to you,” a heavily accented voice says in English. “You will explode after a few minutes.”

Navy officials said the voice was recorded from the internationally recognized bridge-to-bridge radio channel.
Some bloggers were immediately skeptical, noting the voice did not sound Iranian. Iran released its own video, arguing the footage did not show any Iranian boats approaching the U.S. vessels, nor any provocation. Today, the Navy acknowledged that the verbal threat made in the tape may not have been Iranian:
“We’re saying that we cannot make a direct connection to the boats there,” said the spokesperson. “It could have come from the shore, from another ship passing by. However, it happened in the middle of all the very unusual activity, so as we assess the information and situation, we still put it in the total aggregate of what happened Sunday morning. I guess we’re not saying that it absolutely came from the boats, but we’re not saying it absolutely didn’t.”

Iran releases its own tape on Hormuz ship incident

Borzou Daragahi and Julian E. Barnes Los Angeles Times – January 11, 2008

Courtesy of TheTruthSeeker.com -- Iran released a videotape Thursday to support its side of an ongoing propaganda battle with Washington over a weekend naval confrontation in the narrow waterway leading into the Persian Gulf.

The videotape, broadcast on Iran's state-owned English-language Press TV channel, was meant to bolster Iran's contention that nothing more than routine contact took place between speedboats of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and three U.S. warships attached to the Bahrain-based 5th Fleet.

U.S. officials, including President Bush, have alleged that the Iranian boats harassed the ships in what they described as a dangerous provocation in the Strait of Hormuz. They released a four-minute, 20-second videotape this week purporting to show snippets of the incident with the Iranian boats sailing too close to the U.S. ships and making threats by radio during what was described as a 20-minute confrontation.

Iran has called the U.S. tape a fake. Its own version, also brief and heavily edited, shows the Revolutionary Guard naval forces making radio contact with the warships, and the Americans calmly replying in what Iranians describe as everyday interaction.

Iran says US navy video is 'clumsy fake'

AFP – January 9, 2008

Still from the video.
Courtesy of TheTruthSeeker - Iran on Wednesday accused the United States of "clumsily" fabricating footage claiming to show Iranian speedboats harassing US ships, as tensions rose amid President George W. Bush's visit to the region.

"The pictures that the Pentagon broadcast of the naval incident are file pictures and the voices have all been fabricated," the Fars news agency quoted a senior commander in the Revolutionary Guards as saying.

The Pentagon released a video and audio tape on Tuesday that it said confirmed US charges that Iranian speedboats swarmed around US warships in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday and radioed a threat to blow them up.

"The voices and pictures broadcast by the Pentagon about the latest incident have been fabricated so clumsily that the pictures and voices in the video are not even synchronized," added the source.

Five little motorboats appear- or so we’ve been told- to have threatened 3 United States Navy warships. I’m waiting to hear about another related but under-reported event which involved a handful of Iranian schoolboys throwing rocks at a Navy submarine. This event seems to have resulted in the submarine coming within minutes of launching a Tomahawk missile at the boys. The ship’s commander, who remains anonymous as does everyone reporting on everything concerning all of these incidents, said that the crew of the submarine felt gravely threatened by the boys and that several of them had to receive onboard counseling.

The US navy initially claimed that they mistakenly identified the passenger liner as an Iranian fighter, and denied that they were not inside Iranian territorial waters.

But the official ICAO investigation found that the US Navy guided missile cruiser's attempts to contact Iran Air 655 were sent on the wrong frequency and addressed to a non-existent "Iranian F-14".
